Using Creativity to Teach the Ethics of Generative AI
This paper presents a general education course offered at The Pennsylvania State University that integrates AI ethics within a creative arts context. The course emphasizes AI literacy and the ethical use of AI tools through the creation and critique of AI-generated art, literature, and music. Since its inception, the course has evolved to accommodate increasing enrollments and diverse student demographics while maintaining a focus on hands-on activities and ethical discussions. Student feedback indicates high engagement with the course¡¯s ethical content, prompting considerations for future course revisions. The authors argue that AI literacy, particularly ethical considerations, is essential for all students and advocate for the creation of similar courses across educational institutions to better prepare students for the ethical challenges of emerging AI technologies.
